An assortment to relish

This is a collection of short stories of different genres. While the taste of each story is different, the author appears to have a witty yet sensitive soul which is reflected throughout his writing.

In this world of complicated lives and hate-filled propaganda, Mr. Pratyush Deb clearly knows how to appeal to the readers’ empathy. Particularly, the stories at the end of the book seems to be of great quality. I would recommend this book to anybody who wishes to dive into the kaleidoscope of human emotions.

A beautiful collection of transcendental meditations

Mr. Deb’s writing style is lucid, fluent, and conversational. His use of clear and short sentences and powerful verbs delineate the storylines almost with a scientific objectivity, yet he manages to retain the innate tenderness of the characters.

I do not think that it will be hyperbolic to claim that this anthology reminded me of ‘Malgudi Days’ by R. K. Narayan and of ‘Aranyak’ by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay. If Henry David Thoreau were alive today, I would like to think that he might have proudly displayed this book on his decrepit dusty bookcase. Expecting great things (maybe a novel) from the author soon.

Pratyush Deb’s ”A Boat on the Sea of Stories“ engages with a wide variety of genres and allows us to flow through a visually appealing set of stories, one of the great attractions of this book. He observes life with empathy and humour, and some of his stories show an endearing attachment to nature.

Hopefully, he will present to us more on that theme in future. The author’s skillful treatment of a repertoire of characters in every story leaves an imprint on the mind. The title of the book, very thoughtfully given, bring up expectations of a long journey ahead of the author.

”A Boat on the Sea of Stories“ is an apt title for this wonderful collection of short stories. I loved the way the stories touched upon the humanity, social relationships and imaginative concepts. The characters are unassuming and the narrative flows smoothly. The author’s creativity shines through in the stories. A truly enjoyable read.

As a filmmaker, I am naturally drawn to the visual potential of these narratives, and some stories indeed achieve this feat deftly. Deb’s concise storytelling allows readers to fully grasp the entire narrative structure, making it easy to retain the complete arc without losing any details during or after the read.

Beautifully light, soulful, and easy to read!

I really enjoyed Theory of Souls. What makes this book stand out is its concept of small and light stories—perfect for when you want a meaningful read without diving into a heavy novel.

Each story is quick to finish but leaves a lasting impression.
My personal favorites were:

Family Secret: Full of intrigue and very well-paced.
The Haunted Forest: Atmospheric and perfectly eerie.
An Ordinary Love Story: A grounded, relatable, and touching piece.

If you appreciate short stories that jump between mystery, emotion, and the supernatural, I highly recommend this collection. It’s a great “coffee-break” book!

Beautiful collections of stories

What I loved most was how effortlessly the stories flowed. Each one was short enough to finish in a sitting yet meaningful enough to linger in my mind long after.

A few stories genuinely stood out for me:

An Independent Woman – beautifully explores independence, parenting, emotional loneliness, and society’s expectations from both men and women. Revathi’s journey of choosing contentment over validation felt deeply empowering, while Anirudh’s emotional struggles added a raw and realistic touch to the story. The writing is simple yet thoughtful, making it an easy read that quietly leaves an impact.

Family Secret-gripping and layered with suspense

The Haunted Forest-atmospheric with just the right amount of chills

An Ordinary Love Story -simple, heartfelt, and deeply relatable

This book is perfect for readers who enjoy soulful short stories that are light to read but emotionally impactful at the same time. Definitely the kind of book you’d want beside you during a peaceful coffee break.

Nice.

Theory of Souls and Other Stories dives into a lot of different genres and manages to diversify the stories very well, even those which are on the same subject and that are not repeated at the same time.

I personally quite like the cross psychological horror genre stories. However, fantasy genre stories do not lack their magical atmosphere.

What I liked most about this book was how simple yet meaningful the stories felt. Every story was short and easy to read, but still had emotions that stayed with me after finishing.

The book is a collection of 13 short stories, each with a different setting and each belonging to a different genre. This brilliant collection proves that stories don’t need to be hundreds of pages long to leave a permanent mark on your heart. It is the ultimate literary escape, perfect for a peaceful evening.

What makes this anthology stand out is how effortlessly the narrative flows across a kaleidoscope of genres. The author flawlessly shifts between eerie supernatural chills, gripping mysteries, and deeply grounded emotional dramas without ever making the transition feel jarring or overwhelming. The language is refreshingly simple and reader-friendly, yet it carries an understated emotional depth that quietly activates your thought process.

A few standalone pieces genuinely stole the show for me. “Jebediah and Obadiah” is an incredibly moving piece that dives into the silent world of pet communication, offering a heartbreaking yet beautiful look at the profound weight of animal grief that will deeply touch any animal lover. In contrast, “Death of a daughter” masterfully fuses a tense, classic murder mystery with the raw emotional gravity of a family drama, illustrating how meticulous justice can overcome a tragic, senseless crime. Finally, “Family secret” serves as a brilliantly paced anchor for the collection, elegantly balancing the heavy shadows of ancestral guilt with the warmth of modern family acceptance and an inspiring, practical vision for rural growth.

Ultimately, this book is a soulful, engaging, and comforting read that lets you experience a whole universe of human emotions and thrilling adventures in one sitting. It balances lightness with a hauntingly beautiful gravity, making it a must-read for anyone who appreciates short fiction with a human filter. If you want a book that sits quietly beside you but echoes loudly in your mind long after the final page, then dive into this absolute treasure.

One moment, I was reading something light and humorous, and the next I found myself inside a dark or emotional situation. The shift between horror, fantasy, tragedy, romance, and humour felt smooth and natural rather than confusing. I appreciated how the author balances serious emotions with lighter moments, making the collection feel entertaining without becoming too heavy.

Some stories stayed with me longer because of their emotional depth. I especially enjoyed the way human emotions and relationships are explored. Whether it is love, loneliness, fear, or family bonds, the stories present these feelings in a simple but meaningful way. Even the shorter pieces manage to leave an impact because the characters and situations feel relatable.

The writing style is easy to follow and very engaging. The author does not overcomplicate things, which made it enjoyable to move from one story to another. I also liked the subtle adult themes included in some stories because they added realism and maturity without feeling excessive.

Another thing I appreciated was the creativity behind the ideas. The stories often begin in ordinary situations but slowly reveal deeper emotional or philosophical layers. That mix of imagination and human experience is what makes the collection stand out for me.

What stayed with me most is the feeling that every story has something different to offer. Some make you smile, some make you uncomfortable, and some quietly make you reflect on life and people around you.

Overall, I found Theory of Souls and Other Stories entertaining, thoughtful, and emotionally rich. It’s a great read for anyone who enjoys short story collections filled with variety, imagination, and human emotions.

What I liked most about Theory of Souls and Other Stories is that it feels like a collection built around people rather than plots. While the book covers different genres, the characters and their emotions are what stayed with me.

Some stories are unsettling, some are touching, and a few quietly make you reflect on everyday relationships and choices.

I especially enjoyed how the author avoids unnecessary complexity. The stories move at a steady pace and get straight to the point without sacrificing depth. A few endings caught me by surprise, while others left me thinking about the characters long after their stories were over.

Not every story had the same impact on me, but that is part of the charm of any anthology. Overall, this is an engaging collection that offers a mix of emotion, mystery, and human insight, making it a satisfying read from beginning to end.

I enjoyed reading Theory of Souls and Other Stories because it never settled into one predictable pattern. Every story felt different, not only in theme but also in the emotions it explored. One moment I was reading a suspenseful tale filled with tension, and the next I was immersed in a story about relationships, personal choices, or human vulnerability.

What stood out to me most was the author’s ability to create interesting situations within a limited space. Despite being short, many stories felt complete and left enough room for reflection. The Sound, Stay-at-Home Father, and The Stepfather were among the stories I found particularly memorable because of their engaging characters and thought-provoking themes.

The writing is straightforward and accessible, allowing the stories themselves to take center stage. While a few stories ended more quickly than I expected, the variety kept the collection engaging throughout. Overall, this is a well-balanced anthology that offers mystery, emotion, and suspense in equal measure.

What stood out most was the variety of genres. From eerie horror tales to imaginative fantasy, touching tragedies, and heartfelt stories of love and family, each narrative felt distinct while maintaining a consistent quality throughout.

The characters and situations reflect real human emotions and social realities, adding depth to the stories. Even the shorter pieces leave a lasting impression, encouraging readers to reflect on the choices and relationships portrayed.

The inclusion of humour alongside more serious themes creates a satisfying balance. Overall, this anthology is a rewarding read that captures the complexities of life while delivering memorable and enjoyable storytelling throughout.

I went into this book expecting one or two memorable stories and a few forgettable ones, which is usually my experience with anthologies. Surprisingly, I found myself finishing almost every story without wanting to skip ahead.

What worked for me was the variety. Some stories focused on suspense, others on family relationships, and a few left me unsure of where they were heading until the final paragraphs. I particularly enjoyed the stories that relied on atmosphere rather than twists. Not every story landed equally for me, but none felt unnecessary.

By the end, the collection felt less like a set of separate stories and more like different snapshots of people dealing with difficult situations. That made it a satisfying and worthwhile read.
